Yoga Nature: Breath, Movement, Peace

Body, Mind, Spirit: Yoga in Bohemia

Students at all levels of engagement, from absolute beginners to super flexible yogis and yoginis, are welcome in this course. We will work to enrich our practices through asana (postures), pranayama (breathing exercises), and dhyana (meditation, including chanting). We will deepen our understanding of the basic principles of yoga by studying the “Eight Limbs,” including Chakra awareness.

Our ongoing conversation will center on Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, particularly regarding the achievement of peace. We will meditate on the yama called ahimsa, or nonviolence, and will visit the concentration camp at Terezin to contextualize ahimsa relative to the violent history of Central Europe. Each student will compose a personal essay on any aspect of this subject, and will keep a journal.

All reading materials will be sent to students by e-mail attachment before we arrive in Prague.
