Scholarships & Fellowships

John Woods was one of the finest poets of his generation and one of the most underrated. For many years a professor at Western Michigan University, John Woods was the author of numerous critically acclaimed volumes of verse. These scholarships in his name are meant to honor him as an artist and teacher, and to assist writers at all skill levels and all levels of academic affiliation and progress to afford the unique, often life-changing experience of attending the Prague Summer Program.

From those who apply for John Woods Scholarships, four full-tuition fellowship winners will be chosen:

The Ivan Klima Fellowship in fiction writing
The Pavel Srut Fellowship in poetry writing
The Eda Kriseova Fellowship in nonfiction writing
The Vaclav Havel Fellowship in playwriting or screenwriting

The winners of these fellowships will be honored members of the Prague Summer Program community. They will attend the Program "tuition-free," except for a $150 registration charge, $75 insurance charge, and the cost of housing and travel. They may earn up to seven hours of academic credit, or attend as auditors.

The DEADLINE for fellowship consideration: February 1, 2009.

All finalists in each genre will be considered for publication in WMU's literary magazine, Third Coast, with special consideration given to the winner in each genre. Third Coast editors will select one winner, judged best overall submission, for publication in the journal's fall 2009 issue. Please note that previously published material will not be considered for inclusion in Third Coast.

John Woods Scholarships will be offered as tuition reductions toward two- and four-week enrollments, as follows:

Four-week enrollment
$750   one-course enrollment
$1,000 two-course enrollment

Two-week enrollment

$375 one-course enrollment
$500 two-course enrollment

How to apply for scholarship/fellowship consideration:

Each scholarship applicant must submit the name and e-mail address of a writer who has published at least one book in his or her respective genre and who has expressed a willingness to nominate the applicant.

The PSP utilizes an online scholarship application system: PSP fellowship/scholarship application. The online process will enable the applicant to complete quickly a brief application, which includes the applicant uploading a Word-file attachment of ten (10) representative pages of prose fiction or nonfiction (may be an excerpt from a short story, novel, essay or memoir); up to 10 pages of poetry (5-poem limit); ten (10) pages of play or script (may be an excerpt from a longer work). We realize that it can be frustrating excerpting from longer work, but we are more interesting in judging the quality of an applicant's writing from sentence to sentence than judging a work in its entirety. We ask that you adhere to these page limits.

There is a $20 application fee payable online for scholarship consideration.

Your manuscript should have a cover sheet containing the following information:
1. Your name
2. Your e-mail address
3. Your phone number
4. Your nominator's name
5. Your nominator's e-mail address
6. Your nominator's most recent book publication, including publisher and publication date. We will contact the nominator; the nominating process is brief and to the point.

Scholarship notification will be made by e-mail within 2 to 4 weeks of your application.

Anyone with extenuating circumstances preventing them from applying online should contact Margaret von Steinen, PSP Coordinator, at 269-387-3993.

The DEADLINE for fellowship consideration: February 1, 2009.
