Academic Credit

Up to seven (7) hours of advanced undergraduate or graduate credit may be earned from Western Michigan University for students completing a 4-week enrollment in the Prague Summer Program. Each workshop counts for four (4) hours, the culture and social studies courses count for three (3) hours of undergraduate or graduate credit, photography courses offer three (3) hours of undergraduate international credit. Only those attending for all four weeks of the program may garner academic credit.

All students seeking academic credit for writing workshops and the afternoon culture and social studies courses must also attend the Tuesday Lecture Series (10 a.m. to 1 p.m.) and submit a minimum 1000-word personal essay on the 2009 theme to the PSP director by the evening of the final Tuesday of the program. In addition, creative writing students seeking credit must attend all of the Ypsilon Theater readings (few will find this requirement anything but a joy).

Photography students are encouraged to participate in all general program activities that do not conflict with scheduled photography classes and activities. Photography students will prepare a final portfolio and will participate in an exhibition that will be mounted in the fourth week of the program.

Understand that classes may be added or dropped before the 2009 session begins, and that the PSP director will negotiate with you if he feels that a workshop other than the one you indicated may prove the better match. Any changes to your class schedule or changes in credit/no credit status should be requested by June 15, 2009. WMU has strict policies/deadlines regarding schedule and credit/no credit status changes. Applicants may drop or add a course once the PSP commences by submitting a written request to the coordinator by July 9, 2009. See the WMU Registrar’s website for more information at: www.wmich.edu/registrar

Students may also design directed-study courses in collaboration with PSP Director Richard Katrovas.
